The Pitalkhora Caves date back to the 2nd century BCE and were excavated during the Satavahana period, although they were later expanded and modified by subsequent dynasties. There are about 14 caves in total, and they were primarily used as Buddhist viharas (monastic residences) and chaityas (prayer halls).

Among the notable caves at Pitalkhora are Cave 3 and Cave 4. Cave 3 is the largest and most impressive, with a pillared veranda, a spacious hall, and a stupa (a Buddhist shrine). Cave 4 is smaller but stands out due to its intricate carvings and sculptures, including figures of Buddha and Bodhisattvas
Pitalkhora Caves are not as well-known or frequently visited as some other cave complexes in Maharashtra, such as Ajanta and Ellora. However, they offer a serene and less crowded experience for visitors interested in ancient Buddhist art and architecture. The site is a protected archaeological site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
